Explosion Proof Lighting

Certain industrial areas contain an array of hazardous, explosive substances and materials.  Workers must take a wide range of safety precautions to avoid accidents and protect themselves.  The owner of the industrial area must also take precautions to prevent emergencies and protect their workers, whether it be a factory, test site, or some other form of industrial complex where hazardous materials are present.

One of the primary concerns when certain flammable chemical substances are present is explosion.  Explosion and fire can be triggered in the presence of these substances by electrical lighting.  At the same time, safety also requires the presence of illuminated exit signs to help individuals find their way out during emergency evacuations.

Self-luminous and photoluminescent exit signs provide explosion proof lighting to mark escape routes and reduce the risk of explosions.  These signs do not use electricity, removing the risk that illuminated exit signs will spark flammable substances.  At the same time, they do produce light, allowing them to be seen clearly in times of emergency.

What Are Self-Luminous Exit Signs?

Self-luminous signs use tritium-filled tubes coated with phosphor to create a glow.  When the tritium gas and the phosphor come into contact with each other, the phosphor gives off light.  Signs that use self-luminous technology require no electricity because they use this chemical process instead for illumination.  These explosion proof signs are an excellent safety choice for areas where hazardous materials are present.

What Are Photoluminescent Exit Signs?

Photoluminescent exit signs also use a chemical to create a glow.  These signs are coating in a material that absorbs light from its environment, then re-emits that light in the dark.  Essentially, photoluminescent signs make use of basic glow-in-the-dark technology to provide non-electrical illumination.  Just like self-luminous exit signs, photoluminescent exit signs reduce the risk of sparks that could ignite an explosion.

Why Choose Non-Electrical Signs?

Building safety codes as well as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA, require the presence of exit signs for emergency safety.  They also require the use of specific safety measures in particularly hazardous situations, such as in the presence of flammable or explosive substances.  These signs meet all sign safety requirements.
