Emergency Exit Light 101

What Is An Emergency Exit Light

An emergency exit light can refer to number of different safety lighting products.  Emergency exit signs are signs that display the word 'EXIT' illuminated in either red or green.  Emergency lights are lighting fixtures that turn on during emergencies to illuminate corridors and stairways.  Combination exit signs with emergency lights combine both of these fixtures together to provide a 2 for 1 solution for those who need to install both.  Both exit signs and emergency lights are required by local, state, federal, and international building codes.  The Exit Store has a team of experts on hand to help you with any product and code compliance questions or concerns that you might have.

There are a number of different types of emergency exit signs, each with its own application.  Thermoplastic exit signs are affordable and durable; they are a great choice for most indoor commercial applications.  The EXIT series thermoplastic exit sign is offered in black or white and comes with a universal mounting plate, so it can be top, back, or side mounted.  Two faceplates and once backplate are included for single and double-sided applications.  The chevron arrows pop-out on site and the units can connect to either 120 or 277v AC power.  A battery backup system is standard so the sign will remain illuminated for at least 90 minutes in emergency mode.

Similar to the EXIT series, the TES-EL-1 thermoplastic emergency light is our most popular and affordable model.  The TES-EL-1 features two incandescent 5.4-watt lamp heads that easily swivel to provide a large area of illumination.  The TES-EL-1 is offered in black or white and comes with a powerful battery backup system.  The unit is suitable for ceiling and wall mounting.  The TES-EL-1 is also offered in a version that features more compact and sleeker halogen MR16 lamp heads that provide a more aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Combination exit sign with emergency light fixtures are great for those who have to install both fixtures near each other.  Only one source of power is required and there is a single battery backup system to maintain.  Combination units feature an exit sign that is constantly illuminated with top or side-mounted emergency lamp heads that illuminate in emergency mode.  The TES-EXL series combination models are made from durable thermoplastic and feature side-mounted incandescent lamp heads.
